| About the title of the CD, John Carey, CL provided by John Carey:
The CD title, CL, stands for CraigsList. For those of you who have used this website (CraigsList.org), you know how useful it can be. Whether you’re looking to rent an apartment, sell a car, buy a new bass guitar or adopt a new pet, CraigsList provides you with perhaps the most extensive classifieds section online or anywhere for that matter. It is region specific and the classified ads are meticulously categorized in sections and subsection, etc.
The title track on my new record, CL, was clearly written about CraigsList; but more specifically, it was written about a ficticious ad posting under the ‘Casual Encounter’ subsection of the personals. In short, it’s about a female graduate student (named Melissa) at Columbia University in NYC who posts an ad on CraigsList looking for a no-strings attached sexual encounter. Perhaps it looked something like this:
Personals, Casual Encounters: (UWS, NYC)
28 Year Old Female Grad Student Looking for Play Tonight . . .
Hi guys. I’m a 28 year old female grad student at Columbia University and I complete my studies this month. . . I really want to fulfill a desire that I’ve had for some time now and it seems like CL might be the way to go! Looking for the right guy for one night of pure pleasure, no strings attached. The bigger the better, d/d free is a must. Please send a pic for a reply and I will respond in kind. Email me at mellissa28@columbia.adu. Looking to do this tonight around 8pm. Can’t wait. . .
The twist to the story line is that this female grad student, Melissa, does indeed connect and meet a man (named James) using CraigsList, and all goes as planned. They really ‘hit it off’ and Melissa receives multiple orgasms just as she wanted. What she didn’t intend however, is for James to become infatuated with her (or who he imagines she really is). So much so, that he begins to think of her as if she were now a girlfriend and that they were intended to be together forever, etc. This becomes apparent in the chorus of the song.
Lyrically, the song was written in a reverse chronological order, so it begins with, for the most part, Melissa’s orgasm and ends with discovering how they actually met, via CraigsList.
I wanted the feel and tone of the song to be robotic or computer-like, because the song is based on meeting via the Internet and by using a computer. Oz Noy’s unique guitar solo combined with my distorted synthesized bass guitar throughout the tune provided for this intended vibe. You should feel like you’re being sent through a cable modem or phone line when you listen to CL!
The rest of the record, of course, has nothing to do with CL. In fact, CL is the most ‘pop friendly’ song on the CD and is the most shallow and insensitive with regard to its lyrical content. The remainder of the CD is very emotional and honest in nature. CL was written to make you laugh and also to make you think about these sorts of casual encounters happening in real like on a regular basis! It’s an interesting phenomenon and there should really be some in depth research done on the subject.
Perhaps it’s a prime example of how we’ve evolved to the highest point in our sexuality, not needing or relying on others for relationships, but rather finding substance in our interests (i.e. Melissa the grad student involved in her studies) . . . She was simply using CraigsList as a means to have a superb orgasm before getting back to work. Or, conversely, maybe it symbolizes the degeneration of sexuality, one hiding behind a computer to meet partners, posing as what we might not really be in reality. It would most certainly be considered immoral and dangerous by many to have random sexual encounters with those whom we do not care about or love. You make the decision. . . Is casual sex with anonymous partners good or bad, right or wrong? And remember to try and laugh a bit in the process when listening to the song! This was its original intent.
Cheers,
-John Carey
